Coventry Station Buildings Complete

Chris has put the finishing touches to Aitchison's design of Coventry (1838-1839) as the station was first built..

A small but significant milestone was reached yesterday evening when the completed forecourt was united with the station and bedded in with the stone paving. Coventry had no platforms as such but at least the area adjacent to the up line was surfaced. The down line had nothing, but more of that later.

There is still work to do around the exit gateway where the wall of the forecourt meets the curved wall by the roadside. This is a difficult area and probably best sorted out with everything in place - a matter of joining the dots.

With a few more waiting passengers and ballasted track this area will be ready for some final photography. The scratchbuilt station lamps are wired up too and give a dull oily glow rather than the super bright cold LED glare usually found with proprietary model lamps. At least I can rest assured that the forecourt and steps are safely fitted to the layout rather than sharing the window sill with all sorts of other bits (or ‘work in progress’ as I prefer to think of it).
